Matthew 2:1-12
The King born in Bethlehem
Wise men seek and worship King Jesus who was born in Bethlehem

1) Wise men from the east come to Jerusalem after Jesus is born in Bethlehem, 2:1.

2) The wise men ask where the one born King of the Jews is for they come to worship, 2:2.
The wise men (Magi) were well-educated men who specialized in astrology, interpretation of dreams, and sometimes magic arts. What is amazing about their seeking to see the one born “king of the Jews”?

3) When he hears the wise men’s request, Herod and all Jerusalem are disturbed, 2:3.
Why is Herod so distressed? Why is all Jerusalem disturbed? How might this be a picture of Jerusalem’s later response to Jesus?

4) Herod consults the priests and scribes to ask where the Messiah was to be born, 2:4.

5) The priests and scribes say Messiah is to be born in Bethlehem as the prophet wrote, 2:5-6.
Why was it so important that Jesus be born in Bethlehem?

6) Herod asks the wise men to find the child that he may come worship him too, 2:7-8.

7) The star the wise men had seen goes before them and rests over where the child was, 2:9.

8) When the wise men see the star they rejoice exceedingly with great joy, 2:10.
What is so amazing about the wise men’s joy in seeing the star? What can we learn from their exceedingly great joyful response?

9) The wise men see the child, fall down and worship, offering him expensive gifts, 2:11.
What is the relationship between what we find joy in and worship?

10) The wise men are warned in a dream not to go to Herod so they leave another way, 2:12.
